Season of Swing

On December 14th, 2018 Angela O’Neill and the Outrageous8 hosted their Holiday Show at their home base in Burbank, California.

Our thanks to Greg Simay of MyBurbank for his review of our Preview Night below. Greg and his wife were our guests at our preview night, where we invited a few special guests to come and be the first to see our Holiday Show.

MAKING THE SEASON SWING THIS FRIDAY

“Angela O’Neill and The Outrageous 8 will make VFW Ship 8310 swing and sing this Friday, December 14, at 8 p.m.  As revealed by their Wednesday night rehearsal, they’ll be greeting the season with classic holiday tunes and perennial American songbook favorites, all set to the rhythms of rejoicing.  Arranger Harry Smallenburg has made even the most familiar Christmas chestnuts as crunchy as fresh fallen snow.

Along with the solo turns, band leader and mezzo chanteuse O’Neill will keep our feet tapping as will noted singer Al Timss , who’ll be sharing the mike with her.

People familiar with the LA music scene already know that The Outrageous 8 is outrageously talented, given the A-level roster:

Richard Walker – baritone sax, flute

Ron Cyger – alto sax, clarinet

Sam Morgan – tenor sax

Harry Smallenburg – trombone, vibes

“Hollywood” Paul Litteral – trumpet

Gary Leng – bass

Hank Mehren – keyboard

The Outrageous8.

We are super excited to announce that Antonio Saviour, great cousin to Nat King Cole is joining us for a performance at our show this Friday January 18 at the Gardenia Supper Club in West Hollywood.

Antonio has a silky smooth voice and when you hear him sing, you can hear his family roots coming through. He does sound like his great uncle Nat King Cole.

Come and hear Antonio and meet him at this intimate venue and hear his stories about how the family would gather around the piano in song. He’ll also be doing a duet with New Zealand jazz singer Kathryn Hopkins.

Happy New Year 2019 from Angela and the Outrageous8

Happy New Year!!

Here we all are, on the other side of Christmas and kicking off the new year - 2019!

We hope you had a good time whatever you were doing over the holidays with family and friends. We’ve been having some chilly nights and are definitely into our winter weather. Nothing like getting cozy and roasting some marshmallows.

Big shout out to all that came to our Christmas Show!!! We had a full room at the VFW and everyone had a blast. We do love to get our crowd swingin! The free download of our digital album just released in time for Christmas is now available on our website. Click here.

Continuing in the holiday spirit, Angela and the Outrageous8 played for a special New Year’s Eve event in Los Angeles.

A very special SHOUT OUT to Julie Hewett of www.juliehewettla.com for Makeup and Cindy Wright of Coif Salon in Studio City for Hair. Both these ladies are incredibly talented at what they do and have impressive careers thus far.

We’re back to rehearsing and preparing for our first show of the year at the Gardenia Supper Club January 18.

Nat King Cole touched the lives of many and his music spans across multiple generations. If you like the music of Nat King Cole, this show is for you! It’s our Nat King Cole tribute show. Being big fans of his music, we are doing a tribute show in honor of the music he created. For those that came to our last tribute show, this is a new set including new arrangements by Harry Smallenburg.

“I like him because he was a success and still stood up for what he believed in” says Angela.

Al Timss will be joining Angela O’Neill on vocals, singing songs like Unforgettable, Paper Moon, The Nearness of You and When Sunny Gets Blue.

Tickets $20 at the door. Reservations required.

We hope you’ll join us for our first show for 2019 at The Gardenia and Angela and da boyz, look forward to swingin you throughout 2019.

As always, our thanks to Al Timss for lighting and audio and all those that work behind the scenes to make our shows possible. A lot of work goes into each show, with rehearsing and logistics to make it come together for a smooth and enjoyable experience to our audience, so we are very grateful to the whole team!

Dec 14 Preview Night - Another glowing review

Vocalists Al Timss and Angela O’Neill warm the crowd with their duet “Love Being Here With You”

We are delighted to have another fabulous review come in today from our Preview Night last night for our upcoming Dec 14th Holiday Show at the VFW Burbank.

WE HAD A BLAST LAST NIGHT!

At Angela O’Neill’s “technical-rehearsal” for her holiday show being performed tomorrow the 14th at the VFW- the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall located at 1006 Magnolia Blvd in Burbank. So much fun! All I can say is GET YOUR TICKETS and GO ENJOY yourselves! We thank her for graciously and generously inviting us to come sit in. She treated me at their bar, to a peppermint martini..yumm. Angela surrounded herself with powerhouse musicians and great guest vocalists. I think of Angela as a cross between a jazz diva and a Broadway theatre star. Her polished professionalism gives her a unique stage-presence and a total command of her domain. She lives to sing and perform and she conveys that. With energy, power and grace, she and her band treat us all to favorite Christmas classics and to standards from the Great American Songbook such as “S’Wonderful” and “Summertime.” The musicians are all excellent and I especially liked the trombone playing and arrangements of Harry Smallenberg and the sax of Jay Stolmack. Al Timss.. a vocalist from Latvia was great fun and Kat Hopkins, as always was great joining the vocal trio on a rousing “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree!” A very memorable evening of GREAT MUSIC EXPLODING in that intimate space!

Angela says “My father is a Navy Veteran and so I'm very grateful to contribute to the "Veterans of Foreign wars" entertainment docket.”

There are 8 members to the band... Founding member and Musical Director Sam Morgan is an outstanding soloist on the Tenor and he has such energy that he makes it soo much fun to do music. Michael Rosen, a fantastic drummer and he also produces and masters our recorded music, Harry Smallenburg plays trombone and also does the vast majority of the one of a kind Octet arrangements that are done only for our band. Paul Litteral on trumpet. he has an incredible resume' as a player having played with Ray Charles, James Brown, Sammy Davis, and many more. Stand up bass Player, Phil Romo is a musician, artist and educator. Hank Mehren..is on the piano, Ron Cyger plays some fantastic , heart wrenching solos on his alto and soprano sax. the room is hushed when Ron plays with such heart and soul. Richard Walker plays such a beautiful, and skilled flute player and then can pick up the Bari sax and holds down the low end.

And finally, our very special guest male vocalist, Al Timss. Born and raised in Latvia.

Our thanks to Joel Rothberg
